October 13th Santiago de Compostela
Raining here in Santiago, so I sought refuge in a restaurant and am having some lunch. Earlier, I tried the five star Parador, 'for Catholic kings ', some say Europe's oldest hotel, for the free meal provided to pilgrims on presentation of one's credential or proof of having fulfilled the 100km minimum distance (a nod to a long-established tradition). But the girl at reception said you had to be one of the first ten in line, (and you also had to go 'down behind the garage ' where some one meets you so you don't spoil the ambience in the hotel proper.). The bloody book I read didn't mention these details! Failed again!!! Michael.
